Automatic translation: Don Van Vliet, 69. Why he called himself Captain Beefheart remains unclear to this day. Was it an obscene joke? Was the name directed against the establishment? Both would be plausible for Don Van Vliet, one of pop's great avant-garde figures, a feared band dictator, and a peculiar cult figure. Growing up in California, he befriended Frank Zappa in school and later made music with him. From the mid-sixties onward, the fame of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band began to spread, and in 1969 they finally recorded their masterpiece: "Trout Mask Replica," one of the most influential albums in pop history. The liberties Beefheart took by combining a wide variety of styles and relying on ruthless intensity have inspired many musicians to this day. In 1982, he began to dedicate his life to painting and retired. Don Van Vliet died on December 17 in Northern California.
