The Yellow Shark

BARKING PUMPKIN

HAVING, IT SEEMS, PLAYED HIS last guitar solo, Frank Zappa has retuned to his initial goal: making his mark as a classical composer. After lacklustre LSO sessions and stiffnecked renditions by Pierre Boulez, he has now found musicians who sound like they were born to tackle his complex, modernistic miniatures with fluency and finesse. Even if the chance of hearing it on Classic FM is probably as remote as catching Brown Shoes Don't Make It on the Breakfast Show, this is one of Zappa's finest hours. And for those who care about such things, the obligatory burst of Louie Louie comes six minutes into track 15. AM
