Daniel Østvold
Visual artist, musician
The cartoon album "The Frank Zappa Cartoon"
is Østvold's fourth English-language contribution to the flora
of documentaries and biographies in the rock genre, all published
by Ford Forlag. The previous three were about iconic bands,
The Kinks, REM and Badfinger respectively. This time, the lyricist
and cartoonist have dealt with a single, and equally iconic,
character.
The comic is crafted as a kind of fable, where the story is
told by a Frank Zappa sculpture(!) Østvold accidentally stumbles
upon in a park during a visit to the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
He strikes up a conversation with the bronze bust, which is
more than willing to tell about the life and career of its smaller
namesake.
